The day belonged to Brackendale's Wendy Montgomery who didn't disappoint the runners, the organizers and the spectators as she posted a blistering fast 8:37:51 in the feature 100 Kilometre Division of the 18th Annual Harriers Elk/Beaver Ultras held May 7 in Victoria, BC. It was Montgomery's second consecutive victory at E/B as she won the 100K race last year in 8:56:40. She placed second overall to Darren Froese, of Victoria, who won the race in 8:17:02. Third place went to Vancouver's Louise McCourquodale in 9:50:21 and fourth was Don Froese, from Lethbridge, AB, in 10:15:04. In the 13 years that the Association of Canadian Ultramarathoners has recognized 100K as a National Championship event, Montgomery ran the fastest time ever, by nine minutes and one second. Her time of 8:35:51 is also an E/B female course record and an improvement of 20 minutes and 49 seconds over her winning time of last year. Both Montgomery and Froese will be strong contenders to be named to the Canadian Team participating in the World Cup 100K Championships in Lake Saroma, Hokkaido, Japan on June 26, 2005. The official ACU 100K Canadian Championship race also took place on May 7 in Toronto, Ontario.

The Harriers Elk/Beaver 50 Mile Division was the designated ACU National Championship and Bob Wall, of Campbell River, and Victoria's Doris Dubicki ran away with the top honours. Wall's winning time was 6:50:42 and Dubicki hit the tape in 8:27:08, good for third overall out of ten 50 Mile finishers. Carlos Castillo, of the host Harriers, claimed second place in 7:30:30. Third male finisher was Gottfried Grosser, of North Vancouver, in 8:40:14. Second female in the 50 Mile Division was Ladysmith's Tammy Lang in 9:41:07 while Francine Hong, of North Vancouver, placed third in 9:41:33. Wall and Dubicki both received ACU Canadian Championship trophies along with their Harriers Elk/Beaver plaques for winning the 50 Mile race.

In the most popular 50 Kilometre Division, the winner was 46 year old Keith Wakelin, from Courtenay, in 3:27:38 followed by Harriers' Michael Lord in 3:40:30 and third place male went to Bob Fontaine, of Campbell River, in 3:48:59. Wakelin dedicated his victory to his wife's stepfather, Bob Mitchell, who recently passed away on April 30. There were 17 finishers in the 50K Division. Top female was Sandra Jensen, of Campbell River, in 4:08:28. Second place went to North Vancouver's Ann Taylor, in 4:27:36, and third female was Harriers' Lindsay Pellow in 4:27:36. Pellow had an extremely fast finish gaining 5 minutes on the second female in her final 10K lap. Last year she gained 6 minutes on the final lap to win the Open Women's Division in her first ultramarathon.

Sooke's Barb Bergstrom, 45, won the 25 Mile Walk in 5:55:59. She was the only finisher in the 25 Mile Walking Division.

The most heart-warming story of the day had to be applauding the oldest competitor of the 39 registrations, 71 year old Gwen McFarlan of Richmond, finishing the 50K race with a smile on her face and a large bandage on her forehead. While running her final lap, she fell and cut her head about the 45 kilometre point of the course. An ambulance was called and it took her to hospital where she received 6 stitches to close a cut above her right eye. Four hours later, after her release from emergency, friends took her back to the exact point on the course where she fell and she finished the race in 9:13:03 to a standing ovation from all participants and spectators waiting at the finish line. Wendy Montgomery gave her new Montrail shoes to Gwen as a tribute to her courage in completing the race.

There were 36 starters and 32 finishers in the four divisions. Montrail presented a new pair of trail shoes to the overall 100K and 50 Mile male and female winners, Froese, Montgomery, Wall and Dubicki while Frontrunners Footwear donated two pairs of New Balance running shoes as draw prizes won by Ron Adams and Donna Lee. Every finisher received an E/B technical race shirt and a Royal Victoria Marathon sweatshirt at the awards ceremony.

Hi Jackal and Bob Reid....I read your comment of "In the 13 years that the Association of Canadian Ultramarathoners has recognized 100K as a National Championship event Montgomery ran the fastest time ever" and also listed on the results as "the fastest Canadian women`s 100K time ever".
I beg to differ as Deanna Lindsay of Canada at age 39, ran 8:30 at the World 100K Challenge in 1999 (only 6 years ago) at Chavagnes en Paillers, France. See website "http://esmond.org/99/france/" for complete results....thanks...just thought you should know (i.e. Deanna now lives out west in the Vancouver area)
