TRAINING TIPS
FARTLEK TRAINING
We're not talking gas-powered training here. Fartlek training actually
originated in Sweden - the term literally means 'speed play' and aptly
describes the intensities used during training.
A fartlek session is one that incorporates variation in speeds whether
you are running, cycling or swimming. Swedish cross country runners and
skiers used the technique when training in their native forests. They
increased the tempo of their workouts by running or skiing hard up the
hills then reducing their pace and recovering on the downhill sections.
The extent of effort was determined by the length of the climb. They
found the approach improved their fitness more effectively than
maintaining a constant effort throughout the session.
In modern times the workout has been modified to suit other disciplines
including cycling and swimming. The speed and effort is varied
throughout the session depending on the terrain or how the athlete is
feeling.
If you want to try it, next time you go for a run in the park use the
trees along the course as your markers. Run solidly to a particular tree
in the distance then ease your pace back until you reach the following
tree. Repeat the efforts depending on how you're feeling at the time and
how much recovery you want to allow yourself.
If you run or cycle with a group, take it in turns to set the pace.
You'll be surprised how effective it is. By the end of the session you
might even feel turbo charged!
